Although motorcycles only really began to gain traction during the First World War, their development continued in the post-war period with strong Kradschützen units in the Weimar Republic. In 1938, BMW and Zündapp began the development of the so-called heavy motorcycles with off-road capability and attached sidecars. After the Second World War, two-stroke engines in particular took the lead. These iconic motorcycles are documented in detail by Frank Rönicke, who presents the development from 1905 onwards.
